VICTORIA, BC – Monk Office, a Vancouver Island owned and operated company, recently attended an annual business conference and a highlight of the trip was participation in a humanitarian visit and donation to Escuela Javiela Chulimuc, an elementary school. The school is located in the jungle of Quintana Roo, a Mexican state on the eastern side of the Yucatan peninsula. The state is home to well-known tourist towns such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum.
Located near the small, coastal town of Tulum, Escuela Javiela Chulimuc offers its students, ranging from 4-11 years old, a unique curriculum that celebrates traditional Mayan culture while exposing students to both Spanish and English languages. Being remote, it is very self-sustainable – the infrastructure promotes the collection of rainwater for bathroom plumbing, the classrooms rely on natural lighting, while only using propane for fuel when necessary.
Monk is a member of the BASICS buying group, the largest network of independent Office Supply Dealers in Canada. Monk and fellow dealers from across Canada donated school supplies and funds to the school. Each child was presented with a backpack of school supplies – pens, pencils, erasers, art supplies, and notebooks. A significant cash donation was made as well. Monk Office attends BASICS meetings annually and initiatives such as this are customary.
